Playa de la Montana Bermeja is a small and rugged black sand beach with a lagoon.
This West facing beach has a natural and rugged beauty.
To get to Montana Bermeja take the road to El Golfo. Two kilometres before El Golfo there is a fork in the road. Take the left turn and drive another 2 kilometres. You will see the parking area for the beach on the left adjacent to the road with the beach to the right.
Take note that the Coast road heading South from here is cut off just after Los Hervidores. On maps it shows that the road continues South to Playa del Janubio but this is not the case. Due to a collapse the road no longer connects to the South, you will need to head back the way you entered the area and join the main road to the South.
Playa de la Montana Bermeja is a lesser known and used beach on the West Coast of Lanzarote a few kilometres south of El Golfo.
The beach is quiet with a rugged feel and coastline.
As you approach the beach along the road the parking area is on the left side. The car park is a cleared dirt area and free.
The beach is on the other side of the road to the car park about a 200 meter walk away.
To get to the beach you walk over the loose gravel passing a lagoon on the right side.
Playa de la Montana Bermeja is a black sand beach 250 meters wide.
The black sand slopes down steeply to the water.
This West facing beach can receive very large waves especially in Winter. Swimming can be very dangerous because large waves create strong currents and rip tides. There are lots of rocky out crops just below the surface of the water.
Take great care if you enter the water, there are no lifeguards to save you if you get into trouble.
There is a large area of black sand to sun bathe on and to the South and North lots of rocks to explore.
The coastline in this area is rocky and very rugged. You can clearly see how molten lava flows entered the sea in this whole area with the cold sea congealing the lava into the sharp and multi coloured rocks.
A few kilometers of Playa de Montana Bermeja in the town of El Golfo is the famous Lago Verde. This is a salt water lagoon turned a deep green. It is well worth a visit but often quite busy.
At Playa de Montana Bermeja you have your own green lagoon known locally as the Mini Charco Verde or the Green Lake Junior.
This lagoon does not have the same roped of restrictions of its big brother in El Golfo. You can walk up close to it and have a good look around. Unfortunately it often does not enjoy the same dark green hue of its big brother up the road.
In Winter around low to mid tide there can be good surfing waves at Playa de la Montana Bermeja.
The main surf peak is straight out and to the right. Catch the waves and go right. Going left of even straight can put you amongst so large and sharp rocks.
Beware of rocks near the surface. The waves is more suited to advanced surfers due to rocks, rips and big waves.
There are no facilities at this beach. The closest shops, bars or restaurants are four kilometres away in the nearest town of El Golfo.
Los Hervidores is one kilometer south from here.
El Golfo town is three kilometers North
The Green lagoon of El Golfo is three kilometers to the North
Playa de Janubio is just three kilometers as the crow flies but due to the cut of road you will need to drive back to the main road and then turn off for the beach and salt reclamation plant.
Off the beaten track beach exposed to large waves.
Rugged and pretty
On the way to Los Hervidores decided to check this beach out.
Nice lagoon and beach. Worth a visit.
