Orzola beach overview

Quiet beach with good access and parking. Consistent manageable and gentle waves make it a great location to learn surfing. Good for sunbathing and swimming with care.

Orzola beach Location

Drive to Orzola town along the LZ1 North. At the end of the LZ1 are you arrive at Orzola turn right at the T junction then take the first left. This starts as a road the after 100 meters turns into a dirt track. Follow the track a few hundred meters until you arrive at the beach and beach car park. Parking is free and normally plenty of space for your car. Need a hire car to get there.

Orzola Beach

Nice secluded beach with space for everyone. At high tide much of the main beach is covered by water. Best enjoyed at low to mid tide.

The beach has dark golden sand with a few stone shelters for windy days. To the left and behind the beach are amazing high cliffs where seagulls, and sometimes paragliders, soar.

Around low tide at Orzola beach it becomes possible to walk to and around the ‘Orzola Cave’ located under the rocky outcrop half way along the beach.

After the cave section of the beach there is a another large section of beach. The upper section of this part is made up of boulders and can be good to explore. The far section is very quiet but beware of the incoming tide, do not get cut off from the main beach.

Learning to Surf at Orzola Beach

Orzola beach is a good beach for learning to surfing. The waves are consistent and usually not too big and powerful. If you do not have your own surf boards they are available to hire in the town of Famara.

If y0u are a beginner to surfing then hire the large soft surfboards, often known and ‘soft tops’. If you have never surfed before it is a good idea to organise some surf lessons first. This way you can learn some of the important safety elements to the sport plus the basic techniques.

When you hire a board remember to have a leash to attach yourself to the board via your ankle. Surf wax is also an important item. You rub the wax on the top surface of the board in the areas your feet will go. Surf wax helps your feet grip on the board and not slip off when you are paddling the board of standing up. You will also need to hire a wet suit so you can stay in the sea longer.

The best place to surf on the beach is the part from the middle and further to the left as you look out to sea. Waves break all across the beach but avoid the right hand edge of beach next to the rocks. There are strong rip currents here.

Exploring and walking at Orzola beach

The beach has some nice and also challenging walks with great views out to sea with the island of La Graciosa in the distance.

Probably the best, but short, walk is the path along the cliffs behind the beach. The walk start behind the car park and traverses the cliff that runs behind the first and second part of the beach. The first half of the walk is relatively easy with great views. Then you reach some rocks that need to be navigated and enter a much steeper section with a big drop. Eventually the path ends and you need to turn back. Exciting path with amazing views.

There are several other walks heading towards the town of Ozola and inland.

The walk towards town meanders its way around the rocks to the right of the beach then heads towards Orzola town

The third walk starts by following the track that you drove along to park at the beach. As the road goes left you can follow the path the keeps going straight. Nice flat walk with few other people.

Dangers, Rips and strong currents

Avoid the right hand side of the beach as you look out to sea. Strong rip currents exist here.

Rips can also occur across the rest of the beach so take care. If the waves are big the currents will be strong. Rip currents can move. A safe place one minute can have a strong current pushing out to sea the next.

If in doubt stay in the shallows below waist height. Be cautious of larger waves pushing in, waist height one second can be over head height the next.
