The Cueva de los Verdes means The Green Caves or The Cave of the Greens. The name comes from the family that sheltered in these caves during fire mountain eruptions. During the eruptions the whole of Lanzarote was being covered in ash and falling debris so a good shelter was provided by the Cueva de los Verdes.
The caves were created 4000 years ago from the volcanic eruptions of the Monte Corona six kilometres away. The lava from the eruptions flowed towards the sea. As the lava flowed down to the sea the outside of the flow cooled whilst the hot lava inside continued flowing. When the lava stopped it left caves, or more accurately the lava tubes, that are still here today thousands of years later.
The full length of the lava tubes goes for many kilometres up towards the Monte Corona. The safest and more easily accessed caves were made safe for visitors in the 1970’s.
The tourist route set through the Cueva de los Verdes is around one kilometre long. The walks through the caves last around fifty minutes. Each walking group is lead by a guide. The guides stop and give commentaries on each section of the caves.
During the walks you will see amazing rock formations and solidified lava flows. The more enhance the rock features and depth lights have been placed throughout the cave systems.
Near the middle of the walk you will see the cave open up into an auditorium with seating. Regular concerts are held in the caves which have great acoustics.
The Cueva de los Verdes costs 10 euros and the guided walk lasts 50 minutes. You will see how lava flows create lava tubes so large you can walk through with ease.
